Best Sunset Spots Around Taupō

by Ceana Priest / 2 mins read

Settle in for front-row sunset vibes at these five golden-hour Taupō spots serving up volcanic views and dreamy skies as the sun sinks.

Whether spreading out a lakeside picnic, plunging into summer-warmed waters, or tackling the ascent to an ancient volcano’s summit for panoramic dusk-dusted views, these five destinations offer the ultimate sunset show. Kick off the evening with a pre-sunset bite in town, or drift across the trout-filled lake on an evening cruise as the sky melts into gold. Or maybe pick your most adventurous friend to captain a Doughboat for a spin along the sparkly shoreline, complete with tunes and pizza. If you're craving something higher, book a parasailing session and soar up to 300 metres above the lake for a sunset view that’s next-level epic. From chilling by the shore to flying high above it, there are endless ways to catch that perfect sunset glow over Taupō.

Mount Tauhara

For an unforgettable heart-pumping sunset mission, hike up Mount Tauhara and catch the Central Plateau glowing in peachy hues from a towering vantage point. This ancient volcano creates a stunning backdrop to the lakeside township, serving up sweeping views all the way south to Tongariro National Park’s trio of active volcanoes. The trek to the summit is a leg-burner but worth it for next-level panoramic views. For the best golden-hour seat, keep going past the trig to find rocky outcrops where the scenery really delivers. Bring a head torch for the hike down, a warm layer for the cool evening air, and plan for a two- to three-hour round trip. Walking only.

No worries — cruise the easy 2-kilometre loop by car under native trees and ferns. Arrive a little early to explore, then settle in at the lookouts framed by towering trees for some sunset magic. Planning to linger past dusk? Park on Shepherd Road and stroll in, as the main gate closes at dusk.

Rangatira Park Lookout

For a laid-back sunset experience, drive to this lookout above the township, where the day’s last rays sweep across town, climb the slopes of Mount Tauhara, and fade into the distant ranges of Kaimanawa Forest Park. It’s the perfect destination for an easy evening outing, especially if little adventurers are in tow. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the grassy slopes, let the kids run wild to tucker them out, and then settle in for the evening show. When the sun finally dips, bundle everyone up and head home for a cosy end to the day.

Location: Corner of Wairakei Drive and Huka Falls Road.

Great Lake Pathway

Mix sunset vibes with some easy adventuring on this 10-kilometre trail, stretching from the marina past secluded swimming bays all the way to Waitahanui. Hop on the path anywhere along Lake Terrace, pick your distance, and stroll or bike at your own pace — perfect for strollers, too. Catch the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park glimmering in the evening light, dive in for a cool dip when the urge strikes, or cosy up with a thermally heated footbath at Taharepa Baths.
