How to play Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary from a golf pro

by Steven Jessup

Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary is a challenging championship course. But Steven Jessup, Wairakei's NZPGA approved head professional, explains how to play some of its trickiest holes.

Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary – 4th hole, par 4 (The Old Oak)

One of the great shorter par 4’s Wairakei has to offer. A well-positioned tee shot is required avoiding the pine left and the two bunkers protecting the right side of the fairway whilst coming up short of the stream meandering from right to left.

Once safely on the fairway a correct club selection is needed to accompany an accurate shot into the green sitting diagonally to the fairway with a drop off on either side. The green is framed beautifully by a large oak just beyond.

Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary – 18th hole, par 5 (Paenga Tui – perching place of the tui)

An eye-catching finishing hole.

Tempting to reach in two for the longer hitters but fraught with danger for any approach shot short or left. The pond and waterfall left of the green are visible from the tee to leave no player in doubt about the challenge ahead.

A stroll across the footbridge onto the green allows a moment to reflect on the round. A great way to appreciate the experience that is Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary.
