Those guests who are willing to leave their hand-built haven in the forest will find plenty of environmentally-responsible activities nearby.

Fiona and William recommend:

Bike

Mountain biking is our favourite way to get  out and about around Taupō and our favourite form of exercise. The Taupō region is the biggest riding hub in the North Island and has a range of rides for every level. The trails can be busy on weekends, but some days you’re lucky if you see another person.

Sail

We love the sustainable  eco sailing tours with Taupō Sailing Adventures, where you can explore the waterfalls and hidden bays on the western side of the lake. Or jump on board the heritage boat Sail Barbary, which is New Zealand’s only electric yacht. Both visit the amazing Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings

Golf

Taupō is blessed with fabulous golf courses. Our favourite is Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary, where you can walk among wildlife in a predator-free, championship golf enclosure. It’s home to endangered takahe and has a creche for kiwi chicks. Golfers can see  pheasants, guinea fowl, pekin ducks, fallow deer and a pair of karearea (falcons) on and around the course.

Swim

To rejuvenate mind, body and soul, a soak in the Wairakei Terraces is an absolute must.  This geothermal wonderland is known worldwide for its healing and therapeutic benefits. It’s natural therapy. In warmer months, we drive down the road to Kinloch for beautiful, safe summer swimming in Lake Taupō.

Raft

Aside from being a lot of fun, the Tongariro River Rafting white water tours actually contribute to the environment in a positive way. The company is serious about operating sustainability and we love the work they’re doing with the endangered whio (blue duck).
