A special little holiday spot where you can experience true relaxation in a friendly New Zealand community, you’ll find time passes slowly here among the rolling hills of rural dairy and sheep farms, helping you get back to life’s simple pleasures.

Nestled on the edge of Lake Maraetai, Mangakino is a well known destination for those keen on wakeboarding, water-skiing, rowing and powerboating. It also hosts the annual North Island Wakeboarding Championships, which sees the town bustling with competitors, supporters and spectators.

The neighbouring villages of Whakamaru and Ātiamuri boast their own dams, providing plenty of
incredible views over cascading water as it makes its journey north.

A brief history of Mangakino

Built in 1946, Mangakino was established as a temporary township as part of the Waikato hydroelectricity generation power scheme which was constructing dams along the Waikato River. Originally there was a worker’s camp, as well as housing for workers with families, a shopping centre, schools and a sports ground.

Once the hydro dams were complete, Mangakino was going to be removed but many residents were keen to stay and nearly 80 years later, there’s still around 1,000 people living there permanently.
