Riding the Craters Mountain Bike Park

Enjoy single-track goodness at Craters MTB Park on free-draining pumice soils just minutes from Taupō. Dedicated locals have crafted a purpose-built MTB playground that delivers more than 50 kilometres of top-notch trails year-round. No muddy bogs to slow down your adventures.

Loop Track A is an excellent option for entry-level riders and families with less experienced younger riders who want a ‘taster’ of the park on single-track trails.

Starting from The Hub, there’s a quick heart-pumping climb from the car park on Inwards Goods, which delivers riders to the looping Tourist Trap. Settle in for an ongoing flow of berms, dips and a couple of quick uphill climbs as the trail winds through dramatic exposed landscapes, offering views across the lakeside township of Taupō to the imposing Mount Tauhara.

Although there’s nothing overly technical here, younger riders should be confident using their brakes as there are a couple of short, sharp descents.

Soak in the mountain air, sweeping off the peaks of Tongariro National Park as the trail gently loops back on itself, navigates a few small switchbacks and dips into small gullies before meandering in and out of the forest fringe before disappearing completely under the pine plantation canopy to Karapiti Road car park. Here, you can take a breather by the information sign or use the toilet. Then it’s back in the saddle and pedalling along the final section of Tourist Trap to drop back into The Hub.
